Task Week 5

Who owns the newspapers and TV stations in your country? Do you think this has an effect on the news that you hear?

Who owns the newspaper and TV stations in Malaysia? Well, from a few of my readings and understanding, I can say that most of them are either owned by the government of Malaysia or owned by political parties of the Barisan Nasional coalition government for example, “Media Prima”.

Media Prima is  a company listed on the Main Market of Bursa Malaysia. It is Malaysia’s leading integrated media investment group. The Group currently owns 100 percent equity interests in TV3, 8TV, ntv7 and TV9. In addition, the Group also owns more than 98 percent equity interest in The New Straits Times Press (Malaysia) Berhad (NSTP), Malaysia’s largest publisher which publishes three national newspapers; New Straits Times, Berita Harian and Harian Metro.

From my point of view, this has made a big impact to our country in regarding the news. Many news are untold in these news because they are told not to. This is because they don’t want the governments name to be bad and they want their viewers to like what they see. Besides tthat, many news are also not told because they want the news to be seen by people from all ages including young kids.

Some of the news are also edited so that they don’t hurt anyone’s feelings. This is a good thing that reporters should do in covering for some one. Some reporters lies in their report so that someone will fall. Basically, these are the things which has made a big impact towards the media world nowadays.

For times like this, some of the political parties are taking these chances to promote their parties through the television and newspapers, while the opposed parties cannot do that because they are not allowed by the government to promote their parties through the media such as the newspaper and the television. Because of this, they have the advantages in the election.

Malaysia has reached its independence for more than 55 years, but some of the things are still not free. Why do we need to do this, lets not be biased towards one thing and lets be fair. I would like to suggest that the owner of the media in Malaysia that they must do something in this. Thank you.

Task Week 4

How often do you read the paper or watch the news on TV? How important is it for you to keep up with current events?

I am very sure that everyone must have read the newspaper and watches news on TV. Even though not every day. There are various kind of newspaper in Malaysia. Berita Harian, Metro, Kosmo, Star and The News Straits Times are a some of the kinds. There are also newspaper in other languages also such as mandarin and tamil. Same goes for the TV. There will be news on the TV every day. Most of the news are shown on the RTM channels. Astro also shows news on the Awani channel.

As for me, I seldom watch the news on TV but I always read the newspaper to keep up with the current events, not only in Malaysia but also around the world. Besides that, I understand that newspaper conveys many important messages and the latest updates on the world. Even though there are magazines and other reading materials, their information is limited and not enough as the newspaper.

From my point of view, people from every profession such as designers, doctors, engineers and lawyers, including myself need to keep up to date with the current event so that they can broaden their knowledge on what is happening. Maybe they can relate the current event to their field.

Besides that, I can say that keeping up with the current event is important for me because I can learn the cultures of others rather than my own culture. It is hard for us to learn the outside culture without feeling them for ourselves. the statement is true but there is another alternative for it. When you see the news or you read the newspaper, you can get a little idea on their culture by just looking on their appearance and the way they talk.

Keeping up to date with the current event is also important for us in travelling. We can plan our holidays on places where to go so on and so forth. We surely don’t want to go on a holiday if it’s a rainy season right? So we can see the news for informations on where to go for our holidays.

As a conclusion, I can say that keeping up to date with the current event is very important in our daily life. Without news, life will be a lot harder.

Task Week 3

What is theatre? How do you think theatre, as a media form, communicates messages to its audience?

Theatre is a form of art which involves in live talents such as an actor and an actress to presents real or imagined events on a stage. These performers can communicate with their audience through speech, gesture, songs and dance. There are many props used on the stage so that the message is delivered clearly thus makes the audience receive the message without having to think first.

For the performers, they need to understand the real meaning of being a theatre performer. There are differences between a normal actor and a theatre performer. One of the most seen difference is that, the theatre performer performs in front of live audience while the other performs inside a television. There is no retake for theatre performer. So, they must have a really high self-esteem and practise to do this job.

In the theatre hall, the audience are asked to keep their phone on silent. This is to not disturb the show while it is going on. every message in the act is very important, the audience must pay attention in every message being told because there is no replay in a theatre act. The audience are also asked to be quite so that they will not disturb the other audience and also the performers. Any unwanted sounds may cause the performers lose their focus in acting.

From my point of view, the audience of the theatre will get the direct message from what they seen. Every word, gesture songs and dance the performers make, it contains message. And from the view of the audience, I am pretty sure that they would understand them. The music plays an important role in getting the mood for the show. The dance shows their expression. Same goes for their gesture and speech. From what I can say is that every movement or media form found in the theatre convey messages.

As a conclusion, I can say that theatre is a very special form of media. It conveys message through various ways and it is a form of entertainment to their audience. Theatre performance should be advertised more on the social networking so that they will be more noticeable and more people will be interested in them.

Task 2 Week 1

Media refers to various means of communication. For examples, television, radio and newspapers are different kinds of media. Nowadays, many information are given out through media from many mediums.

In the modern world nowadays, even gadgets such as handphones and tablets has their own internet plan at a very cheap rate. For example, Digi offers their user the internet plan from as low as RM1 per day. I am very sure that this is very affordable by everyone who uses the smartphone or tablet. Why do I write about these gadgets? Simple, it’s because society nowadays are living in an IT world, so they will communicate through these mediums.

There are many apps for communication in the smartphone, for example, Whatsapp, Viber, Voxer, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. These apps are created by developers at a cheap price so that the users can use this apps to communicate. Whatsapp can be bought at any on-mobile store at only a cheap price. If you jailbreaked your iphone, you can get this app for free. Same goes to the other apps. Besides from the other apps listed, Instagram is a little bit special. I say this because User will communicate through images posted. They say an image describes a thousand words.

Even though we are living in a modern world, people still reads newspaper as a medium for information. A newspaper is a scheduled publication containing news of current events, informative articles, diverse features and advertisings. For me, teenagers should read newspapers. There are informations in the newspapers which is not on the internet. So, when people ask, they will be able to answer it. It also helps them in writing. Their grammar will automatically be okay if they often read newspapers.

Nowadays, every house has its own television, whether it’s a LCD tv, LED tv, Plasma tv or even those old tv’s, every house must have one. I’m pretty sure that 90% of houses in Malaysia has its own television. Television is the greatest medium of all mediums in this world. A company will pay the television company to show the advertisement. Everything which is on the television is paid so that everyone will know about their products or what they are trying to tell. They do this because they are sure that people watches television, no matter from what age.

As a conclusion, media is very important in our daily lives. Without media, its is very hard for us to share information. Thank you.
